IH 10 Reconstruction, Houston, Texas

HVJ performed a geotechnical investigation for the $1.7 billion Katy Freeway expansion, located westward from Houston's IH 610/IH 10 interchange to the City of Katy, a distance of about 20 miles. The freeway will be expanded from the current eight lanes to 14 lanes. HVJ conducted approximately 600 borings as part of a soil and bedrock investigation along the entire length of the future roadway. The IH 10 reconstruction, which includes improvements to numerous underpasses and overpasses, and the construction of detention ponds, sound walls, and culverts, is one of the most ambitious transportation projects ever undertaken by the State of Texas.

President George Bush Turnpike, Dallas, Texas

HVJ provided geotechnical recommendations for the PGBT Eastern Extension - Section XXXI, approximately 9,000 feet. The project included the construction of one bridge crossing Miller Road, retaining walls, culverts and traffic sign foundations. Foundation recommendations were provided in addition to slope stability and settlement analysis. In addition, pavement designs for both main lanes and the frontage road were provided.

Houston Ship Channel Widening and Deepening

HVJ Associates provided field exploration, laboratory testing, and engineering analysis for three projects related to dredging along much of the 50-mile waterway. In the first, we evaluated properties of confined dredged material and analyzed slope stability to determine the maximum height dikes could be raised over soft foundation soils. In the second project, we examined the suitability of dredged materials for dyke construction and made recommendations for slope configurations along portions of lower Galveston Bay. Finally, we analyzed the design and construction of a 6-acre, 12-foot-high island off the north shoreline of Bolivar Peninsula in Galveston Bay. Known as Bird Island, it is thought to be the first island designed and built using dredged material specifically as a nesting site for colonies of water birds such as black skimmers, egrets, and brown pelicans.

IH 35 Water and Wastewater Tunnel, Austin, Texas

HVJ performed geotechnical engineering services for the installation of a water transmission main, wastewater interceptor, and pump station along and east of IH-35. Total project alignment is approximately 67,000 feet. The line will be 36 to 48 inches in diameter.

Houston Airport System

HVJ carried out geotechnical studies at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport for improvements to its North and South Concourse, and for construction of a new air cargo facility. We performed similar studies for the new A and Y Concourses at William P. Hobby Airport.

Trinity River Corridor Project, Dallas, Texas

HVJ performed environmental and geotechnical engineering services for The Trinity River Corridor Project, intended to transform the Trinity River flood zone in downtown Dallas into the nation's largest urban park. Scope included a force main replacement, 60-inch re-use water line at the Central WWTP, four utility crossings of the river, and nine bridges over the river, starting with Continental Avenue Bridge and ending with Corinth Street Bridge.

Texas A&M Science Building, Galveston, Texas

HVJ provided geotechnical engineering services for construction of a science building on the east side of the Galveston campus. The building will provide new research laboratories for marine studies and research and teaching laboratories for biology, field methods and physical measurements. HVJ provided foundation recommendations for the new 33,000-square foot building.
