Michael Hasen, PE 
Technical Director


Mr. Hasen's career encompasses a period of more than 30 years of diverse geotechnical, construction, and environmental engineering experience. He joined HVJ Associates in 1992 and has been deeply involved in the operational and technical management of the firm. Mr. Hasen currently serves as Technical Leader for the firm. He has planned and executed hundreds of studies of a broad range of facilities from residential structures to multi-billion dollar transportation projects. His experience includes geotechnical studies for design and construction of low, mid and high rise office structures, bridges, roadways, water mains, sewer lines, tunnels, wastewater treatment facilities, residences, dredge disposal areas, dredge material beneficial use sites, refineries, power generation facilities, medical facilities, port and harbor facilities, and offshore structures. He has contributed expert consulting on multimillion dollar design-bid-build procurement construction projects as well as public-private partnerships arrangements such as design-build and concession projects.

Mr. Hasen's education background is in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on geotechnical engineering. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Master's degree from the University of California at Berkeley. He also graduated with a Master's in Business Administration from the University of Houston Executive MBA program. His professional activities include committee memberships and chair positions with the ASCE GeoInstitute, Conference Organizing Committee and Session Chair positions for ASCE and the GeoInstitute. He has authored papers and co-edited technical pieces for a variety of publications and conference proceedings.

Mr. Hasen and his wife Susie enjoy traveling, blues music festivals and cruises. Most importantly, they have successfully raised and launched their one son, a millennial, who works as an artificial intelligence programmer.




Hossam Esmail, PE
Sr. Vice President (Operations)


Mr. Esmail joined HVJ in 2000 and provides overall leadership for professional services and pavement engineering. Mr. Esmail offers 30 years of professional experience that covers a wide range of geotechnical engineering project types including infrastructure, transportation, bridges, flood control, treatment plants, higher education, public and private works. Mr. Esmail also plays a key role in marketing and business development activities of the firm.

Mr. Esmail received his bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Alexandria University, Egypt and his master's degree from Concordia University, Montreal, Canada. He is actively involved in the American Society of Civil Engineers and Society for American Military Engineers and is also a member of Texas Society of Professional Engineers and The Egyptian Board of Engineers. CME Manager, Houston Mr. Esmail is married to Suzanne and the proud father of three adult children and grandfather of one. He has a passion for futball and has been known to spend entire weekends in front of a large screen (or several) watching his favorite futball clubs - Barcelona, Real Madrid, ManUnited and Rome. While he always roots for Barcelona during Barcelona/Madrid legendary matchups – he often reassesses if Cristiano Ronaldo is on the field.




Hirendra (Harry) Patel, PE
CME Manager, Houston


Mr. Patel is the manager of the construction materials engineering department with HVJ Associates, Inc. He has 30 years of experience in construction materials (CME) and geotechnical engineering. As a CME project manager, he has overseen field investigations and analyzed field data and test results and performed laboratory testing for large construction projects for various state and local entities including the Texas Department of Transportation, Houston Independent School District, US Army Corporation of Engineers, City of Houston, City of Pearland, Harris County, Texas A&M University, Houston Community College System and OST/Almeda Corridors Redevelopment Authority.

Mr. Patel holds a Bachelor's of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Houston, TX and a Bachelor's of Science in Engineering Technology from the University of Houston- Downtown, TX. He is an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and he holds certifications with National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET - Level III, soil, concrete and asphalt).

Mr. Patel is native of India but relocated to the Houston area in the early 80's for his university studies. He and his wife Bharti are actively involved with the Indian community in Houston. Mr. Patel enjoys watching American sports, and became a loyal Rockets fan when fellow Cougar, Hakeem Olajuwon was recruited to the team. He also maintains loyalties to his home country Cricket teams.




Sharmi Vedantam, PE
Senior Geotechnical Project Manager


Ms. Vedantam serves as manager of the HVJ Associates geotechnical and environmental departments. She has more than 12 years of experience in geotechnical engineering and specializes in soil mechanics, lab and field testing of soils, foundation recommendations for buildings, bridges, retaining walls, culverts, elevated and ground storage tanks, pavement design for paved and unpaved roads, railroad design, slope stability analysis for levees, channels and detention ponds, and subsurface utilities.

Ms. Vedantam is very familiar with Houston area soil conditions and has performed geotechnical services for projects for nearly all the Houston area governing entities including City of Houston, Harris County, Harris County Public Infrastructure Department, Harris County Flood Control District, Port of Houston, Texas Department of Transportation, City of Sugar Land, Fort Bend County, Harris County Toll Road Authority, METRO Transit Authority, North Harris County Regional Water Authority, Coastal Water Authority and is knowledgeable of their project design guidelines and manuals.

Ms. Vedantam received her Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Osmania University, India and a Master's degree in Civil Engineering with a concentration in water resources engineering from the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, India. She graduated with a Master's degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington, TX. Ms. Vedantam is a married mother of two young children. She and her husband are Indian Classical dancers who actively participate in several fundraising events for the Ashta Lakshmi Temple and other non-profit organizations.




Nishant Dayal, PE, PMP, MBA
Business Development Manager - Houston


Mr. Dayal recently rejoined HVJ to become the Business Development Manager for HVJ Associates, Inc. in Houston. His career as a geotechnical engineer extends more than 16 years and covers a wide range of geotechnical, construction materials engineering, and management consulting experience. He has worked on civil engineering projects with geotechnical requirements all over the United States, but primarily in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Kentucky and Texas on structures such as reservoirs, dams, reinforced slopes, bridges, water and wastewater lines, retaining walls, and tunnels. Mr. Dayal has been involved in managing client relationships, project/program budgets, and preparing geotechnical engineering reports, proposals and business development plans.

Mr. Dayal received his Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from National Institute of Technology, India and a Master's degree in Civil Engineering with a concentration in geotechnical and structural engineering from the University of Cincinnati, OH. Additionally, he holds a Master's degree in Business Management from the University of Texas at Austin, TX.

Mr. Dayal is married to Priyanka and has a 3 year-old daughter. He is a tinkerer, an avid reader and enjoys various outdoor activities.
