HERBERT V. JOHNSON, PE
Herb Johnson is President and founder of HVJ Associates, Inc. He has responsibility for corporate vision, strategy, development of company culture, executive team leadership, and capital allocation. He is an accomplished executive and business leader, and leads a team of executives managing over 80 engineers, scientists and support staff delivering quality engineering services throughout Texas, serving state governmental and local agencies, and the private sector.
Mr. Johnson's success has been achieved using a balance of entrepreneurial, managerial and operational expertise. He is a leader adopting innovative business approaches including the institutional of an advisory board, applying generative leadership principles and practices and instituting executive coaching for key personnel. He is a disciplined and inspiring leader, developing and empowering others to achieve their potential.
Mr. Johson earned his bachelor’s degree in Civil engineering at Mississippi State University in 1978. He earned a master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, also at MSU in 1981. Additional qualifications include management studies at Dartmouth College and the University of Texas. Further advanced management and leadership studies were done at the Generative Leadership Institute in Boulder, Colorado.
MICHAEL HASEN, PE
Executive Vice President
Mr. Hasen’s career encompasses a period of over 30 years of diverse geotechnical, construction, and environmental engineering experience. He joined HVJ Associates in 1992 and has been deeply involved in the operational and technical management of the firm. Mr. Hasen currently serves as Technical Leader for the firm. He has proposed, planned and executed hundreds of studies of a broad range of facilities from residential structures to multi-billion dollar transportation projects. His experience includes studies of low, mid and high rise office structures; bridges; roadways; water mains; sewer lines; tunnels; wastewater treatment facilities; residences; dredge disposal areas; dredge material beneficial use sites; refineries; power generation facilities; medical facilities; port and harbor facilities; and offshore structures. He has participated in projects constructed based on typical design-bid-build procurement as well as public-private partnerships arrangements such as design-build and concession projects.
Mr. Hasen’s education background is in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on geotechnical engineering. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Master’s degree from the University of California at Berkeley. He also graduated with a Masters in Business Administration fro the University of Houston Executive MBA program. Professional activities include committee memberships and chair positions with the ASCE GeoInstitute, Conference Organizing Committee and Session Chair positions for ASCE and the GeoInstitute, and authoring papers and co-editing for a variety of technical publications and conference proceedings.
Mr. Atteberry joined HVJ in 2005, and provides statewide leadership and direction of client relationship management for the firm. With over 33 years of construction, public works management and private sector experience Mr. Atteberry handled budgeting, capital improvement programs, personnel and project management for the cities of Houston, Carrollton, and Collin County. Mr. Atteberry serves clients in both public and private sector infrastructure markets including transportation, water, energy and higher education.
Mr. Atteberry's experience in Texas has ranged from managing the Infrastructure Maintenance Management Program for the City of San Antonio, and Pavement Management Services for the City of Lubbock, as well as establishing the survey procedures and criteria for an Inventory Suryvey for the City of Grand Prairie ADA ramps including a Transition Plan. Mr. Atteberry is a member of the American Public Works Association and Past President of the Texas Chapter. He is currently serving as Chairman, Roundtable Road Group Gang for the North Central Chapter, Texas Public Works Association.
Vice President Business Development and Marketing
HOSSAM ESMAIL, PE
Senior Vice President of Operations
Mr. Esmail joined HVJ in 2000, and provides overall leadership for Professional Services and Pavement Engineering. Mr. Esmail’s offers 30 years of professional experience that covers a wide range of geotechnical engineering project types. Mr. Esmail’s expertise covers infrastructure, transportation, bridges, flood control, treatment plants, higher education, public and private works. Mr. Esmail also plays a key role in marketing and business development activities of the firm.
Mr. Esmail received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Alexandria University, Egypt and his master’s degree from Concordia University, Montreal. Mr. Esmail is actively involved in the American Society of Civil Engineers and Society for American Military Engineers. Mr. Esmail is also a member of Texas Society of Professional Engineers and The Egyptian Board of Engineers.
NAMONDO (DIDI) MBIWAN NDANDO, PE
Vice President Finance and Administration
Ms. Didi Ndando directs the financial and administrative services of the firm. She joined HVJ in 1992 as a staff engineer, but over the years she experienced a growing interest and aptitude in management and leadership as she moved on to project and department management. With a background in both operations and management Ms. Ndando brings a unique perspective to her position. She is passionate about service and understands the importance of quality client service.
Ms. Ndando received a BS degree in civil engineering from the University of Houston and an MBA from Texas Woman’s University. Her engineering career encompasses geotechnical studies both on and offshore, as well as environmental and materials testing. She is licensed as a Professional Engineer in the State of Texas and has served in leadership roles in ASCE-Houston.
