City of Houston Pavement Management System

We inventoried and surveyed over 6,000 centerline miles of streets for the city's Pavement Maintenance Management Program. Surveys included curbs and gutters, shoulders, roadside ditches, railroad crossings, pavement striping, and bridges. We developed computer software to rate pavement condition and select rehabilitation strategies.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, Austin

HVJ provided engineering services to the City of Austin for the conversion of the former U.S. Air Force base into city's new international airport. New pavements were designed following FAA guidelines for airside pavement, which includes runways, taxiways, and aprons. AASHTO guidelines were used for landside pavements-roadways and parking lots. Finally, we implemented MicroPAVER©, pavement management software developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to assist airports in monitoring pavement conditions and optimizing the use of repair funds.

City of Austin Reconstruction program

HVJ performed pavement evaluation, deflection testing, and rehabilitation designs for over a dozen streets. Our designs included construction plans and costs for asphalt mill and overlay, asphalt pavement reconstruction, concrete bus lanes and pads, sidewalks, driveways, ramp improvements, traffic control, striping, and temporary environmental controls during construction. HVJ provided construction phase consulting.

Easterwood Airport, College Station, Texas

We surveyed the condition of all airside pavements to help Easterwood implement the MicroPAVER© software system. We collected thickness and strength data and conducted deflection testing to determine Pavement Classification Numbers for estimating allowable aircraft loads.

City of Brady Street Improvement Project

Brady is a town of about 6,000 people in the geographic center of Texas. The city government wanted to implement street improvements based on the MicroPAVER© system. We inventoried and surveyed all of Brady's streets. We also developed construction documents to Texas Department of Transportation standard specifications and assisted with the bidding process. Construction phase consulting was also provided.

City of San Antonio Pavement Management System

The project involved updating the City's Road Inventory Pavement Management System database and linking it to the newest GIS files provided by the Right-of-Way Management Division. HVJ conducted pavement condition surveys on 1,300 centerline miles and provided a final report including cost estimates and street analysis using HVJ's PMMP software to replace the City's existing ICON software.

Bayport Backlands Expansion

Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) measurements were collected and analyzed to develop subgrade strength values for the design of pavement for a new state-of-the-art container terminal at the Port of Houston. A full scale test pad was constructed using standard construction methods and FWD deflections were measured at varying loads to determine the effects of heavy front and side lift trucks, straddle carriers, yard gantry cranes, and tractor trailer systems on the subgrade soils.
