Preserving One of Austin's Most Scenic Roadways

July 24, 2025

As roads age, they show signs of wear caused by daily factors such as erosion, traffic, and weather exposure. However, rehabilitating older roads can be challenging due to limited construction records and difficulty reaching the site. In our latest case study, HVJ South Central’s V.P. of Geotechnical Engineering, Leo Ruiz, shares his experience working on the rehab of one of Austin’s most scenic and iconic roads, Comanche Trail.

Leo explains, “I've always been drawn to the intersection of nature and design, so I was excited to participate when we got involved with this project. It's not just about fixing a road; it's about preserving a connection to the land, the people who rely on that roadway, and the community impacted by the deteriorating slopes and roadways. We take a people-first approach because every project represents more than just bricks and mortar— it's about the relationships we build with our clients. It's that personal connection that makes projects like this so fulfilling. Seeing the positive outcome and knowing we made a real difference was incredibly inspiring.”
