HVJ Associates | Engineering Services Texas

Geotechnical Services

HVJ is a leader among geotechnical firms in Texas. Our primary work is to examine the soil, bedrock, and groundwater conditions at construction sites. Our geotechnical engineers are able to identify problems quickly and recommend solutions.

We engage in an array of projects. In transportation, our geotechnical services are necessary for highways, railroads, airports, and seaports. For utilities, we work on construction projects related to drinking water, storm water, wastewater, and distribution systems that handle treated water. We perform geotechnical services for new subdivisions and sites for municipalities, buildings, manufacturing, and refining plants.

Most of our geotechnical engineers hold advanced degrees and have extensive knowledge of Texas soil conditions. As a result, HVJ is often called in to correct issues related to unexpected or unique soil conditions.  Our alternative solutions have saved clients millions of dollars. Our extensive knowledge of soils in the Lone Star State is a value-added benefit of working with HVJ.

In our labs, technicians test soil and rock samples using automated equipment, all calibrated to regulatory specifications. Our standards meet or exceed those set by Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), The American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA), and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).

To enhance quality control, all geotechnical data are tripled checked, first by the lab technician, then by the lab manager, and finally by the geotechnical engineer assigned to the project. We stand behind our work.

Geotechnical Services Include:

  • Foundation and pavement design
  • Settlement and subsidence analysis
  • Underpinning and special foundations

  • Deep foundations and pressure injected footings
  • Earth retaining structures and reinforced earth
  • Slope design, soil and rock stability
  • Landslide analysis and control
  • Expansive/collapsing soils
  • Dams and reservoirs
  • Hydroelectric facilities
  • Soil and rock instrumentation and blast monitoring
  • Braced excavations and tieback walls

Environmental Services

Today's environmental regulations have increased, placing greater requirements on property owners, buyers and sellers, investors and insurers, to name a few.  You can be held liable for contamination or negligence, regardless of fault. HVJ can help by conducting studies that document the condition of soil, groundwater, air or building materials.

  • Phase I and II Enviornmental Site Assessment (ESAs)
  • NEPA Environmental Assessments (EAs)
  • Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP)
  • Remedial Investigations
  • Petroleum Storage Tank Removal Coordination and Investigations
  • Hazardous Waste Management
  • Invasive and Non-Invasive Geologic Fault Studies
  • Wetland Delineation and Permitting
  • Ecological Assessments

HVJ is a registered Corrective Action Specialist (CAS) with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). A Professional Geologist (PG), registered by the State of Texas as a Corrective Action Project Manager (CAPM), heads our highly trained and experienced environmental group.

We routinely conduct site assessments for property managers and those transferring ownership. Our engineers, geologists, and environmental scientists satisfy due diligence requirements — the first line of defense in any liability. Site assessment services are offered in stages to provide maximum benefits in the most cost-effective manner.

HVJ is recognized for its hazardous site studies and our ability to move projects through remediation in compliance with all state and federal regulations. We develop remedial designs and oversee bidding, construction, and final implementation. If follow-up operations are required, we perform routine inspection, collection and analysis of samples.

Remedying petroleum storage tank leaks is a key part of our environmental business. We help clients meet regulatory requirements by supervising the removal of leaking storage tanks, assessing the impact to soil and groundwater and managing the project through closure with the TCEQ.

HVJ works with road builders, construction firms, and housing developers, to perform ecological assessments such as wetland delineation, wetland permitting, endangered species surveys and evaluation of critical habitats. Our services are conducted in strict accordance with protocols and regulations of responsible city, county, state and federal regulatory agencies.

"HVJ did a quality job in implementing the Pavement Management System for the City of Houston.  They established the foundation and set the ground work that we have been able to build upon over the years.  We were pleased with their management involvement and follow through in seeing that the city was informed and kept abreast of any issues.  PWE was very satisfied with their overall job performance."
