In 2019, only ten years after opening, the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA) required an expansion to keep up with the rapid growth and economic responsibilities of the airport and the city.

This $54 million expansion project contains 6 buildings (133,150 sq. ft.) spread over 29.88 acres of airport property designed to house the Consolidated Maintenance Facility.

HVJ was tasked with providing comprehensive geotechnical and construction materials engineering services for the design and construction phases including providing recommendations for all maintenance facilities foundations. Additionally, while undergoing testing and inspection services during construction of the project, HVJ determined substandard materials had been utilized during a much earlier phase. Use of these materials had caused pavement distress.

With prompt action and constant communication, HVJ’s multi-discipline teams were able to assist the city in resolving the pavement complications and allow the airport expansion to remain on schedule.
