Announcement: New Harbor Bridge Opening

July 7, 2025

HVJ Associates proudly announces our work on the recently opened, much-anticipated Harbor Bridge in Corpus Christi, Texas. The bridge is the longest precast segmental cable stay bridge in North America, spanning 1,661 feet! It is the highest point in South Texas at over 400 feet tall,  accommodating tall ships that can carry more cargo and compete with other Gulf Coast deepwater ports.

HVJ was proud to be involved in the project from the initial schematic phase through construction. We provided geotechnical services for TxDOT, including over 10,000 linear feet of drilling to aid in the Reference Information Document (RIDS). The 150 borings included in the RIDS enabled the bidders, namely Flatiron Dragados LLC, to prepare their bids for the project. HVJ also provided Owner Verification Testing throughout nearly 10 years of construction. Our team collaborated with HNTB to review project plans, conduct inspection services, and perform soils, concrete, and hot mix asphalt testing.

We also provided services to the project team to evaluate the 170 design life concrete value-added design commitment by FDLLC. Typically, the testing required for input into TxDOT’s Concrete Works program is lengthy and involves shipping test samples across the country. However, HVJ used a correlation with available resistivity equipment to significantly reduce the testing time, increase testing frequency, and cut costs associated with shipping and testing.

Engineers rarely have the chance to work on a project from start to finish, especially one that spans 12 years. Senior staff members Mike Hasen and Jason Schwarz managed the project from beginning to end. HVJ’s consistent staffing allowed many minor issues to be quickly resolved based on past experience before they became major problems. We are proud to have played an important role in building infrastructure that will benefit the region for decades to come.
