The 50-foot slope involved in the TxDOT I-10 Collector Distributor Project was one of the most interesting challenges Vice President of Operations Jason Schwarz has completed in his time with HVJ Associates®. This 5.75-mile, $160 million project was placed on an expedited schedule despite the teams needing to overcome the uniquely large slope. With the bustling Sunland Park Mall just next door, HVJ provided a series of alternative designs, and ultimately a drilled shaft wall design with tiebacks was implemented which eliminated the need to obtain additional Right Of Way which would reduce available mall parking.

This drilled shaft wall design presented challenges of its own as the composition of the slope was a problematic cobblestone and boulder mix. This particular mix required HVJ Associates® to bring in skilled drillers from the surrounding area and coordinate a complex drilling schedule.

During this challenging drilling process an auger became stuck while in the middle of the roadway during overnight construction. Fortunately, due to foresight and proper planning, Schwarz had the necessary equipment on site -- when notified of the situation he was already on en route to El Paso, and the auger was removed without any damage well before morning traffic commenced.
