Welcome John Bilyeu, 25-year TxDOT Veteran

November 9, 2021

Recent hire John Bilyeu arrived at HVJ Associates with 25 years of experience in transportation engineering, an excellent array of technological tools with valuable industry relationships already in place. “I’m fortunate to have had good mentorship and guidance from former colleagues,” he said.

Now a project engineer in the Austin office, Bilyeu received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Texas Tech University. He is registered as a Texas Professional Engineer.

Before joining HVJ, Bilyeu worked at TxDOT, where he gained expertise in nondestructive test data analysis, technical writing, GIS analysis, and field investigation coordination/testing.

When he is not out in the field, collecting data or meeting with clients and contractors, Bilyeu writes reports about the state of city streets and highways in the Austin area, providing alerts to both immediate issues and future challenges.

Bilyeu’s personal belief is that learning is best done through kaizen, a Japanese term for appreciating that, in the work environment, change comes in increments and involves all employees. His outlook aligns with HVJ’s philosophy that the success of infrastructural projects rests on the strength of the people involved. And “there is always room for improvement,” he noted.

When off-duty, Bilyeu likes to relax with outdoor activities like motorcycling and sailing. He also helps his son’s Cub Scout troop with campouts and other events. And he enjoys playing the five-string bass.

Please welcome John when you meet him!
